Hamburger Stroganoff
Category: Main Cuisine: Russian-inspired
A comforting twist on traditional Stroganoff using ground beef, creamy sauce, and mushrooms served over noodles or rice.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef (lean preferred)
- 1 large onion (chopped)
- 2 garlic cloves (minced)
- 8 oz mushrooms (sliced)
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 cup sour cream
- 2 tbsp flour (for thickening)
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp paprika
- to taste salt
- to taste black pepper
- 4 cups cooked egg noodles or rice
Instructions
- Heat olive oil and 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 3 minutes.
- Add minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
- Increase heat to medium-high and add ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add sliced mushrooms and cook until tender, about 5 minutes.
- Sprinkle flour over the mixture and stir to coat. Cook for 1-2 minutes.
- Pour in beef broth, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
- Reduce heat to low and stir in sour cream and paprika. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Heat gently but do not boil.
- Serve over cooked egg noodles or rice.
Chef Notes
- Use lean ground beef for less grease.
- Adjust paprika for smokiness or color.
- Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired.
Variations
- Add sliced onions or bell peppers for more vegetables.
- Use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream for a tangier flavor.
- Replace noodles with mashed potatoes.
Storage
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave.
Serving Suggestions
- Serve with a side of steamed vegetables or a simple green salad.
